Review of the film : " Lagaan "

On the occasion of the Independence Day. In the Department of English we have a film screening of "Lagaan". we watched this movie not as for Entertainment but we try to look and understand deeply the Metaphors and Structure of  the film. This Film can be Interpreted in many ways.

1) patriarchy :

Into the film shows patriarchal power. Also some of the point shows women at center for example the learning process of cricket from British lady Elizabeth. So she become reason behind the success of  Bhuvan and other village people. It shows woman power but on the other side Gauri can't play cricket because she was lady. People think that cricket is a game for men not women. So it defined the patriarchal structure in society.

2)  subaltern :

Subaltern who has law position in every way of socially and politically. In the other words people who marginalised or oppressed under others. So in the film villagers subaltern under the rule of British and king. King himself also under the power of Britisher. The character of kachra also marginalised character. The name of him also shows how people consider him. Kachara means useless thing. So thus subaltern concept highly reflected into this film.

3) post colonialism :

The Chapaner village was under the rule of British. It shows how they ruling over the Indian villages. King of Chapaner didn't speak against the British power.  Village people are forced to play the Cricket by Britishers. So they have not option in except to play the game. Britishers forced to play cricket because they have mastery in the cricket and they think that these village people can't win. Also it reflects the cruellest behaviour of them. How they oppressed the villagers and king.

4) Team work :

Team work of Bhuvan and his team become the reason behind their success. They all were able to make their village free from British rule. Team build with the people who have  different qualities. In this team also people have different quality. Also the leadership of Bhuvan played a vital role behind their success. Bhuvan has a qualities of  a leader. He never losses his hope. He tried to encourage his team to be successful.

5 ) Symbolism in Film :

● Temple :

Temple become the source of strength for villagers. When villagers loss their hope at that time they pray to God. Also the bell of temple has significance meaning when first time Bhuvan tried to make his team at that time he hit the ball and the ball hits on temple's bell. It also shows religious way that God gives permission or he also wants that they build cricket team and fight against British people. It also shows agreement of God.

● Yoga :

Yoga is the symbol of Indianness. In this film shows Bhuvan and other Cricket team members doing yoga for the fitness of their health. By showing yoga it highlights Indian culture in film.

● Food :

Food becomes the reason of suffering for villagers. It also become symbol of power and suffering. Britisher forced king to eat meat but king denied to eat it. The  reflection of king became reason of villages people suffering they have to pay double texts.

So the film has these different perspective. It helps to look the same thing with the different ways. This thing comes from deeper thinking and deeper understanding.  It helps to understand the things which shown in the film.

Cultural studies: media, power and truly educated person. The word “culture” itself it so difficult to pin down, “cultural studies” is hard to define. As far as cultural study is concerned, it has broader meaning because we see from various perspective then an individual can know what actually it lays in the meaning. Therefore firstly it becomes my job to deconstruct the meaning of culture as the meaning is elaborated according to different critics so at first we will have glance on the meaning of culture.
