My Grandmother

The poem my grandmother is written by Elizabeth Jennings. In this poem she talk about her relationship with her grandmother. She says that now she is dead, now she is not with the poet. And her absences motivate poet to write poetry. She miss her and that is the reason that she writes poem. In this poem she talk about her memory with her grandmother. And this thing becomes the title of the poem.
Her grandmother owns the antique shop. And in most of the poetry she talks about the that shop and her grandmother' s relationship with shop. She tell that now after her death that anyone don’t take care of the shop. She also that if her  grandmother is here she will never leave shop in this condition.
Further in poem she talks about the her guilt that once her grandmother told  her to come with her but at that time she refused to go. Now when grandmother is not there she is feeling guilty. She feels that at that time she must not refuse. But now she won’t able to change anything. At last she also describe little time period of her grandmother’s retirement.

 Images in the poem include:

Vivid description- The place smelt old, of things too long kept shut. It shows how old that place was creating a mental picture on the readers mind

Simile- like antique objects, to show persona’s objection to the way he was treated by the grandmother.

Metaphor-The smells of absences; the place smelt old.

Paradox- - things she never used, but needed: / it shows that the grandmother was attached to the things she had  but   she didn’t really use them.  They did not have any value to her apart from being attached to them.

So in this way we see that in this poem poet talks about the her grandmother. Apart from that we also found different images in poem like vivid description, simile, metaphor and paradox also.
